Restoration at Old North Church
Crews atop towering scaffolding inside Boston’s historic Old North Church are carefully peeling away over a century of white overpaint to reveal a hidden treasure: delicate, 18th-century angel murals high in the gallery arches. Led by conservator Gianfranco Pocobene, the team uses cotton swabs, solvents, and plastic spatulas to slowly uncover cherubic figures and ribbon-and-flower festoons painted around 1730 by church member John Gibbs. Remarkably, beneath the neutral 1912 repainting lie some of America’s earliest intact decorative paintings. The restoration, in time for the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s midnight ride, aims to restore the sanctuary to its original colorful glory.
